Short version: September to November is the easy answer — dry roads, golden rice, then buckwheat flowers. March and April are the quiet secret. July and August are the wettest by a distance, and people still ride them and love it.
Ha Giang city sits low and warm; the loop climbs to 1,500 m and does not. Every figure below is for the city, and you should assume the passes are five to ten degrees colder, wetter, and in cloud more often. That gap is the single most useful thing to know when you pack.
December to February — cold, clear, empty
The driest stretch of the year. December averages around 88 mm of rain against 379 mm in July, and the air is sharp and clean. Days reach about 18 to 20°C in the city and nights drop to around 11°C; on Ma Pi Leng it can be near freezing at dawn, and fog sits in the valleys until mid-morning.
Ride it if you want the mountains to yourself and you own a warm layer. Do not ride it in a t-shirt because the forecast for Ha Noi said 24°C.
March to May — the underrated months
Temperatures climb steadily: about 23°C in March, 27°C in April, 29°C in May. The rain starts in April and builds, but it arrives as afternoon storms rather than all-day drizzle. Everything is green, the roads are quiet before the summer crowds, and the light in the mornings is very good.
This is our own favourite window and the one we suggest to anyone who can travel outside the autumn rush.
June to August — hot and wet
The wettest part of the year by some way: July around 379 mm, August around 309 mm, with highs of 31°C and nights that stay near 23°C. Rain does not usually last all day, but it can be heavy enough to wash mud across a road, and a landslip after a storm can close a section for a few hours.
It is also spectacularly green, and much cheaper to travel in. If you come now, build slack into your plans and take the four-day tour if you can — the extra day absorbs a lost morning.
September and October — the rice
The terraces turn gold from about mid-September to mid-October, and the rain is easing while the warmth holds: around 30°C in September, 27°C in October. This is the best-looking month of the year on most people's evidence, and it is busy for that reason.
November — the buckwheat
Buckwheat flowers open across the rocky ground around Dong Van and Meo Vac from late October through November, pink and white against grey limestone. Days settle to about 24°C, the air is dry, and the roads are at their best.
Book earlier than you think
Our peak runs from September through to April, and tours can fill two months ahead in that window. If your dates are fixed, book them; if they are not, the last week of a month tends to have more space than the first.
What this means for your bag
Whatever the month, bring one warm layer and one waterproof one. We provide the raincoat, the helmet and the protective gear, and there is a longer article on this blog about what actually earns a place in a small backpack.
