Ha Giang Loop Packing List (2026): What to Pack for Every Season
Short version: a light waterproof layer, long trousers, something to swim in, and less than you think. We lend you the helmet, the raincoat and the knee pads, and we store the rest of your luggage at the office for free.
If there's one thing more dramatic than the mountain views in northern Vietnam, it's the weather. You can leave Ha Giang city in 28°C sunshine and be in cloud at 12°C ninety minutes later on Quan Ba. Nobody packs for that instinctively, so here is what actually earns a place in your backpack.
The one bag rule
Whatever you bring on the bike has to fit in a small backpack or a strapped-down day bag. Leave the suitcase with us — there is no charge and it will be in the same place when you get back. Riders who try to carry everything spend three days uncomfortable and end up buying a bungee cord in Dong Van anyway.
Two or three days of clothes, one warm layer, one waterproof layer, and your passport. That is genuinely it.
What to bring, whatever the month
- Long trousers. Not optional. Even a slow fall on gravel is a bad day in shorts.
- Closed shoes. Trainers are fine, sandals are not.
- A light waterproof jacket. We give you a poncho, but a real jacket is better.
- Swimwear. The Du Gia waterfall is the highlight of day two for most people.
- Sunscreen and lip balm. At altitude you burn without feeling hot.
- Your passport. Homestays are legally required to register guests.
- Cash. There are ATMs in Dong Van and Meo Vac but do not rely on them.
- Any personal medication, plus something for an upset stomach.
Season by season
September to November — the best window
Rice is golden, buckwheat flowers open in late October, and the air is clear. Days are 20–26°C, mornings on the passes drop to about 12°C. Bring one fleece and you are set.
December to February — cold and often beautiful
Dong Van can sit at 5°C and the fog on Ma Pi Leng sometimes does not lift until noon. Thermal base layer, proper gloves, a hat that fits under a helmet. On a clear winter morning the views are the best of the year.
March to May — green and comfortable
Plum and pear blossom in March, terraces flooding in May. Warm days, occasional heavy afternoon showers. Pack the waterproof layer near the top of your bag.
June to August — hot, green, wet
The rainy season. Landslides are possible and we sometimes reroute a day at short notice. Quick-drying clothes, two pairs of shoes, and patience. It is also the emptiest and cheapest time to ride.
What we provide
- Helmet (full-face available on request)
- Raincoat or poncho
- Knee and elbow pads
- Bungee cords and a dry bag for the bike
- Free luggage storage at our Ha Giang office
What to leave behind
A drone unless you have checked the current rules — several viewpoints near the border are restricted. Anything valuable you would be upset to lose off the back of a bike. And a hair dryer; homestay power is not always up to it.
Still not sure? Send us your dates on WhatsApp and we will tell you what the weather is actually doing that week. We are in Ha Giang — we can look out of the window.
